VA Community Care

Using your VA benefits here is simpler than you think.

You don’t have to figure out insurance authorizations alone. Our intake team does this every day.

STEP 1

Ask the VA — or ask us

Already have a referral? We take it from there. Not sure? Call and we’ll walk you through requesting one.

STEP 2

We handle the paperwork

Our intake team coordinates directly with the VA and verifies your authorization before your first visit — no surprise bills, no chasing approvals yourself.

STEP 3

Start the same week

Same-day evaluation with a licensed clinician, then your start date — morning or evening track, in person in Glendale or Mesa, or virtual statewide.

The Program

More than weekly therapy. Not a hospital.

MHCA’s IOP runs 4 days a week, about 3 hours a day, for 8–12 weeks — enough structure to make real progress, while you keep working and stay home with your family.

  • Weekly individual therapy with your own provider
  • Psychiatric care & medication management on the same team
  • Evidence-based modalities — CBT, DBT, trauma-informed care, neurofeedback
  • Step-down to weekly therapy with the same care team when you’re ready

Is IOP Right For You?

IOP is the right level of care when…

Weekly therapy isn’t enough to manage what you’re carrying — you need more frequent contact and structure.

You’re functioning at work or home, but daily life feels unmanageable without more help.

You’ve stepped down from inpatient or a higher level of care and need structured support to stay on track.

Post-deployment adjustment, PTSD, or trauma is affecting sleep, relationships, work, or how you feel day to day.

Not sure? The evaluation determines the right level of care — IOP, weekly therapy, psychiatry, or a combination. No commitment.

Measured Outcomes

We don’t guess whether care is working. We measure it.

Every MHCA patient’s progress is tracked with the same validated assessments used in clinical research — PHQ-9, GAD-7, PCL-5.

Questions

What veterans ask us first.

Do I need to go through the VA to start?

No. If you have TRICARE or commercial insurance you can start directly. If you want to use VA benefits, we’ll help you request a Community Care referral through TriWest.

What does it cost?

With a VA Community Care authorization, TriWest, or TRICARE, most veterans pay little to nothing out of pocket. We verify everything before you start — no surprise bills.

Will this interfere with my job?

That’s the point of IOP — morning and evening tracks, about 12 hours a week, so treatment fits around work. Virtual attendance is available statewide across Arizona.

Is the program only for PTSD?

No. We treat depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, and co-occurring conditions. Your evaluation determines the right plan — IOP, weekly therapy, psychiatry, or a combination.

Is virtual IOP as effective as in-person?

Research shows virtual IOP delivers outcomes comparable to in-person care for most patients. Virtual delivery removes the drive and lets you participate from anywhere in Arizona.

What happens after IOP?

You step down to weekly therapy, medication management, and wellness with the same care team, on the same chart — no starting over with someone new.

Talk to someone who knows the VA system.

Our intake team verifies TriWest, TRICARE, and VA Community Care benefits before your first appointment — usually the same day.
