Our approach
The biopsychosocial method.
Real progress requires a plan designed for you, not a diagnosis code. We factor three areas into one complete picture before recommending anything.
Biological — genetics, medical history, and your physical self, including anything that could be mimicking or worsening a mental health concern.
Social — family background, relationships, work, and the circumstances shaping your day-to-day life.
Psychological — beliefs, personality, behavior, and everything that makes up your mental and emotional self.
One team, under one roof
You don’t get referred out. You get a whole team, in the room, on your case.
This is what sets MHCA apart: psychiatry, counseling, testing, and IOP/wellness aren’t separate practices that hand you off — they’re one multidisciplinary team working from your one chart. Your psychologist, psychiatric provider, and therapist consult on your case directly, in whatever combination your treatment plan calls for. No re-explaining your history to someone new. No waiting on outside records.
The more of the team you engage with, the better patients do.

Based on 944 MHCA patients with two or more validated assessments (PHQ-9, GAD-7, PCL-5), January 2024–May 2026. Individual results vary; this is observational data, not a guarantee of outcomes.
What to expect
A clear path to a better you.
A mental health assessment is a comprehensive clinical interview — not a pass-or-fail test, but a baseline that supports or updates a diagnosis. It takes two appointments and no one-size-fits-all plan follows.
1. Your assessment (~2 hrs)
A doctoral-level psychologist covers learning and memory, behavior, mood, anxiety, sleep, relationships, and family history, and may add brief supplemental questionnaires.
2. Your accurate diagnosis (~30 min, a few days later)
Your file is reviewed by our multidisciplinary team to confirm the diagnosis before any plan is built.
3. Your treatment plan
Built around your life, your schedule, and your goals — reviewed with you in person, not emailed.
→ 4. Ongoing support
Counseling, psychiatry, or wellness therapies in the same chart — whatever your plan calls for.
Cost ranges from $250 to $900, depending on complexity and insurance. See full details on our Pricing & Insurance page.
Who this is for
You don’t need a crisis to start.
A mental health assessment is appropriate for anyone — something doesn’t have to be “wrong” for a comprehensive look at your mental health to help.
New to MHCA
The recommended first step before starting counseling, psychiatry, or any ongoing service here.
Mood, anxiety & life transitions
Ongoing sadness, worry, stress, grief, or a major life change that’s affecting how you function.
Updating an old diagnosis
A diagnosis from years ago, a different provider, or one that no longer feels accurate.
Establishing a baseline
You’re not in crisis, but want a healthy, honest read on where you stand today.
Looking for ADHD, autism, or a psychoeducational evaluation instead? Those are more specific, instrument-heavy evaluations — see all four types of testing.

Common questions
Mental health assessments at MHCA.
Do I need to be “in crisis” to get an assessment?+
No. Assessments are appropriate for anyone and everyone. Establishing a baseline understanding of your mental health can guide treatment or simply give you a healthy awareness of where you stand, even without an urgent concern.
What’s the difference between an assessment and ADHD or autism testing?+
A mental health assessment is a clinical interview and document review — the standard starting point for care. ADHD, autism, and psychoeducational testing add standardized psychometric instruments to answer a more specific diagnostic question, and take longer and cost more as a result.
Does insurance cover a mental health assessment?+
Often, yes. MHCA is in network with UnitedHealthcare/Optum, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, Medicare, TriWest, and more. We verify your specific benefit and quote your exact out-of-pocket cost before scheduling. Private-pay rates run $250–$900.
What happens after my assessment?+
You’ll return a few days later for a review session of your diagnosis and treatment plan, and be introduced to the team who’ll work with you — counseling, psychiatry, or wellness therapies, depending on what fits. If MHCA isn’t the right fit, we’ll help you find a referral instead.
Can I get assessed virtually?+
Yes. Unlike ADHD, autism, and psychoeducational testing, a mental health assessment can be completed entirely by video from anywhere in Arizona.
